Why the work of an actor begins not in performance, but in permission—to be ordinary, accurate, and fully alive in the room. We often imagine acting as becoming someone else. A different accent. A different walk. A different voice. But great acting has surprisingly little to do with pretending. It has everything to do with telling the truth. Not your literal truth, but emotional truth—the kind audiences recognise instinctively. It’s the tiny hesitation before answering a difficult question. The smile that arrives half a second too late. The breath that catches before someone says goodbye. These moments cannot be manufactured.
